We will be unable to process your deed poll application if your name;
- Promotes racial or religious hatred.
- Contains symbols or punctuation marks other than hyphens or apostrophes.
- Does not contain at least one forename and one surname.
- Is impossible to pronounce.
- Is vulgar, offensive or blasphemous
Also, each deed poll company has a character limit that they can prepare, mainly due to technical reasons and ours is 200, which includes all names and spaces.
You should also be aware that HM Passport Office will only print 30 characters for forenames and 30 characters for a surname (including spaces) on your actual passport.
If your name exceeds these character limits you can submit a request to the passport office to print your full name on passport’s observation page, although this fairly uncommon.
Names that we advise against choosing
Although these names below that we advise against choosing aren’t illegal or breaking any laws, there are many practical reasons why choosing them may cause you problems.
Having your official documents updated such as Passport or Driving License may be very difficult if your new name;
- Is extremely long or hard to pronounce.
- Contains numbers, e.g. 4Life 2Late.
- Is trade marked or subject to copyright, e.g. Argos, Asos, Coca Cola.
- Gives the impression to others that you have an honour, e.g. OBE, MBE
HM Passport Office restrictions on names
As we’ve previously stated above, HM passport office have their own rules and restrictions.
Please note that these are not rules set by the government; they are the rules of the HM passport office itself and alone.
However, if you don’t hold a U.K. passport, then in theory it doesn’t matter what HM Passport Office thinks about your name change, but bear in mind that you may want to hold a passport in the future, which won’t be acceptable at that time.
You should also consider that if your name is unacceptable in the eyes of HM Passport Office, then it’s quite possible that your name will be deemed as unacceptable by other organisations as well.
Hopefully you have found this article on restrictions when changing your name easy to understand and you now have the knowledge you need to make an informed decision about which name you are going to choose.
